Darwin Palmer is the chief of Infectious Diseases at the University of
New Mexico School of Medicine and for the past 25 years has been invo
lved in a number of the ''special'' infections with which the area is
plagued (the most bubonic plague in the nation as well as high rates o
f such more mundane illnesses as shigellosis, tuberculosis, and pneumo
coccal pneumonia). He has worked at this medical center and the Vetera
ns Affairs Medical Center since finishing New York University (M.D.) a
nd the University of Colorado (residency, ID fellowship) and notes tha
t the mix of Anglo, Hispanic, and American Indian populations makes Ne
w Mexico an interesting place in which to live and practice.
