A robust, adaptive control scheme is presented which stabilises a nonl
inear model of a power system to disturbances anywhere in the power sy
stem. The control is local, in the sense that the control of each mach
ine depends only on information available at the machine. Simulation r
esults are presented which show that the control is very effective aga
inst instabilities of current importance such as sustained oscillation
s following a major system disturbance.
