In fluorophosphate glass samples containing Al, Mg, Ca, Sr, Y fluoride
s and Ba(PO3)(2) and Al(PO3)(3) were prepared from reagent grade start
ing materials, melted at 1000 degrees C in air and cooled at 4 degrees
C/s. The stimulated emission cross-section of Yb3+ was observed to de
pend on phosphate contents and modifier ions. OH- ions, which were inc
orporated into glass with phosphate, affect the fluorescence lifetime
of Yb3+. No concentration quenching can be observed for doping concent
ration of Yb3+ less than or equal to 1.02 x 10(21) ions/cm(3). The inf
luence of pumping wavelengths on the lifetime of Yb3+ was also investi
gated.
