Data on glycogenolysis during hypothermic storage of rat liver have be
en obtained over 24h at 0-2 degrees C. There was a steady decline in l
iver glycogen during 24h in livers stored after flush with either citr
ate-based or lactobionate-based preservation solutions. Adding glucose
or insulin to the preservation solution was without effect on glycoge
nolysis, but a combination of added glucose plus insulin prevented gly
cogenolysis. The results are discussed in relation to activation of gl
ycogenolysis during the initial flush procedure.
