The problem of coexistence on a finite habitat of two competing ecolog
ically equivalent populations has been considered. The Lotka-Volterra
type system can be reduced in the vicinity of bifurcation to single Fi
sher type equation. The wave front solution of this equation is unstab
le. The obtained analytical results demonstrate that after an exponent
ially long delay one of species occupies the entire habitat in a catas
trophic mode. The links with the problem of hybrid zone movement are d
escribed.
