A mechanism for the resonant generation of high harmonics of a laser b
eam is discussed. This method may make it possible to increase the con
version coefficient substantially and to move to shorter wavelengths.
In particular, it is estimated that harmonics in the region lambda con
gruent-to 100 angstrom can be generated with an efficiency on the orde
r of 10(-5) in a beryllium plasma. (C) 1994 American Institute of Phys
