A 21-month-old admitted for right-sided hemiplegia was found to have c
ongenital heterozygous antithrombin III deficiency, The mother was als
o affected and had a history of deep vein thrombosis and fetal death,
Clinical, laboratory test, and radiologic findings demonstrated that t
he hemiplegia was due to an ischemic stroke, Treatment consisted of no
nfractionated heparin and daily infusions of antithrombin III concentr
ates for 12 days, followed by long-term oral anticoagulant therapy, Th
e neurologic deficit resolved completely.
