The growing popularity of such products as wireless telephones, laptop
computers, and local area networks has an attendant drawback-the incr
eased threat to privacy and secure communications. End customers are j
ust beginning to become aware of these problems, and are demanding imp
roved security. Encryption technology has evolved to the point at whic
h it is both technically and economically feasible to be employed in p
ublic communications products and systems. AT&T, whose work in encrypt
ion can be traced back to the turn of the century, is at the forefront
in developing products and services that provide encoding capabilitie
s. This issue reviews just a small portion of that work.
