Abstract
Transverse-polarization-transfer coefficients D(NN) for the (p, n) rea
ction at theta = 0-degrees have been measured on C-12, C-13 and Ca-40
targets at E(p) = 80 MeV and the C-12 and C-13 targets at E(p) = 50 Me
V, As for the C-12 and C-13(p, n) reactions, D(NN) for the transitions
corresponding to the Gamow-Teller type and the Fermi and Gamow-Teller
mixed type are compared to distorted-wave Born-approximation calculat
ions. Observed D(NN) values are reproduced reasonably well by the calc
ulations employing either the effective interactions M3Y or the M3Ym i
n which V(Ttau) and V(sigmatau) are modified. A value for R2 = ma(GT)(
0-degrees)/sigma(F)(0-degrees)][B(F)/B(GT)] is deduced by using only t
he D(NN) data from the C-13(p, n) reaction, and is roughly consistent
with R = 1/55 E(p), empirically determined from the cross-section data
at 0-degrees. As for the Ca-40(p, n) reaction, the observed value for
the giant-dipole-resonance region is D(NN) 0.23 +/- 0.05, indicating
that the spinflip and non-spinflip resonances are unresolved. Utilizin
g information from higher-energy D(NN) data, the transition-strength r
atio f of non-spinflip to spinflip and D(NN)(SF) pertinent to spinflip
transitions have been deduced empirically for the giant-dipole-resona
nce region. Obtained f and D(NN)(SF) values are 1.4 +/- 0.4 and - 0.25
+/- 0.10, respectively, and are roughly consistent with the RPA calcu
lations.
