The agriculture of Hungary will be modified in the next decades by two
main factors. One of them is the re-structure due to the privatizatio
n in agriculture. In consequence of that in plant production a more ad
aptable conformity to the ecological and economic conditions is to be
expected. The other one is the effect of global change in climate affe
cting the Carpathian basin. This means an increase in average temperat
ure, a modified vegetation time and poorer water supply for the plants
. All these facts urged the author to systematize the water management
characteristics of plants, based on the Hungarian experiences and the
survey of research results (Table 8). The systematization of water ma
nagement characteristics makes it possible to cultivate the most adequ
ate plant species knowing the water supply conditions of each producti
on site.
