An isolated bower segment (IBS) was created in rats and dogs by a two-
stage procedure. Initial coaptation of the bower segment to the omentu
m (''omentoenteropexy'') is followed by division of its mesentery seve
ral weeks later. The viability of the segment is maintained by angioge
nesis at the coaptation site. Neoformed blood vessels were shown by an
giographic studies, and in a dog the IDS was used for esophageal inter
position. Copyright (C) 1994 by W.B. Saunders Company
