Experimental models of intracranial saccular aneurysms are a useful co
ntribution to our basic understanding of these lesions. Currently, the
commonest in use are those constructed surgically in laboratory anima
ls. We review the numerous surgical techniques available since the 195
0s, and the research applications and uses of experimental aneurysms.
Further development and use of such models is greatly encouraged in fu
ture pathophysiological, hemodynamic, and therapeutic investigations o
f intracranial saccular aneurysms.
