Because of its favorable side effects profile, the oral chelating agen
t dimercaptosuccinic acid is often used for treatment of lead intoxica
tion. We report a case of a 45-year-old black male with glucose-6-phos
phate dehydrogenase deficiency and a 17 year history of occupational l
ead exposure who developed hemolysis during treatment with dimercaptos
uccinic acid for symptomatic lead intoxication.
