Abstract
This paper gives a personal view of the emergence, development and fut ure of automatic control. The assessment is that automatic control has been very successful, but that we are now at a crossroads where we ha ve to decide if we want to take an holistic view with full systems res ponsibility or if we want the field to fracture into a collection of s ubspecialities.
