Abstract
It is shown theoretically and demonstrated experimentally that rapid h eating (thermal shock) of specimens of cement paste and concrete can c ause internal cracks, due to stresses that develop when temperature di fferences between core and surface of specimens exceed 30 C (54 F) for cement paste and 50 C (90 F) for concrete.
