Kr. Narayanan et al., HISTOPATHOLOGICAL CHANGES DUE TO EFFECT OF SUBLETHAL CONCENTRATIONS OF COPPER-SULFATE ON THE HEPATOPANCREAS OF EDIBLE CRAB, SCYLLA-SERRATA (FORSKAL), Journal of environmental biology, 15(4), 1994, pp. 289-293
Based on the LC50 value of copper sulphate (18 ppm) the edible estuari
ne crab, Scylla serrata was exposed to a sublethal concentration of co
pper (1.8 ppm) for a period of 30 days. The cellular organisation of t
he four types of hepatopancreatic cells was affected to different exte
nts. A peculiarity was the presence of some enigmatic spherules seques
tered and eliminated in the treated crabs. The paradoxical observation
was the difference in susceptibility among adjacent tubules, to the p
ollutant (viz., copper ions).
