The effect of thermodynamic quality of the solvent (eluent) on retenti
on and degradation of high-molecular-mass PS during size-exclusion liq
uid chromatography on macroporous and nonporous glass beads was studie
d at different flow rates. The variation of retention volume and degra
dation of the macromolecules of PS under different experimental condit
ions was interpreted within the framework of a new concept. According
to this concept, the degradation of PS during size-exclusion chromatog
raphy is predominantly controlled by the formation of the layer with i
ncreased polymer concentration (quasigel, in the limit) at the surface
of the particles and draining ability of the carrier. Previously repo
rted data on the degradation of high-molecular-mass PS during size-exc
lusion liquid chromatography were interpreted in terms of this concept
.
