An interactive image analysis program has been developed which allows
user observations to be recorded in a structured way. Its major object
ive is to combine the user's capability of shape recognition with comp
uter support for composite data structures and flow control. 'Object-I
mage' is based on the image analysis program 'NIH Image' and can be us
ed to describe cell details as a complex set of points. Vector graphic
s has been added to provide visual feedback in the form of floating sy
mbols, so the image is left unchanged. We presennt examples of yeast c
ells and bacteria, where several parameters per specimen had to be mea
sured, and we include statistics about precision and efficiency of int
eractive data acquisition.
