Abstract
Simple expressions are derived for the pressure in a sound wave, which is emitted in the air by a target irradiated with a laser pulse. The sound pulse shape is controlled by the distribution of energy in the l aser beam, relations between the thermal parameters of the substrate, coating, air, and the absorption geometry. Application of these sound emissions to measurements of heat transfer and coating parameters is d iscussed.
