A device for the deposition of a radioactive Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) fi
lm was developed with the use of: (1) a modified horizontal lifting me
thod, (2) an extremely shallow trough, and (3) a surface pressure-gene
rating system without piston oil. It made a precious radioactive subph
ase solution repeatedly usable while keeping its radioactivity concent
ration as high as possible. Any large-size thin films can be prepared
by just changing the trough size. Two monomolecular-layers of Y-type f
ilms of cadmium [H-3] icosanoate and Cd-109 icosanoate were built up a
s H-3 and Cd-109 beta-sources for electron spectroscopy with intensiti
es of 1.5 GBq (40 mCi) and 7.4 MBq (200 muCi), respectively, and a siz
e of 65 x 200 mm2. Excellent uniformity of the distribution of deposit
ed radioactivity was confirmed by autoradiography and photometry.
