Kpr. Chowdary et Pv. Rao, BIOPHARMACEUTICAL STUDIES ON SOLID DISPERSIONS OF NALIDIXIC-ACID IN MODIFIED STARCHES, Drug development and industrial pharmacy, 20(19), 1994, pp. 3015-3022
The objective of the study is to improve the dissolution rate and effi
ciency and bioavailability. of nalidixic acid (NA) and to evaluate thr
ee modified starches namely dextrin (D) beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) an
d hydroxyethyl starch (HES) as carriers for solid dispersions. Solid d
ispersions of NA in D, beta-CD and HES were prepared by common solvent
method and the dispersions were evaluated by TLC, IR, DTA, X-ray diff
raction, moisture absorption, dissolution rate and bioavailability stu
dies. The three modified starches were found to be non-hygroscopic, no
n-interacting carriers giving solid dispersions and effective in incre
asing the dissolution rate efficiency and absorption, rate of NA.A mar
ked reduction in the crystallinity and crystal size of NA in the dispe
rsions was observed.
