A prototype electromagnetic calorimeter of 5 x 5 modules has been test
ed under a beam of pi0-mesons from events selected by a neutral trigge
r under a 40 GeV/c pi- beam. The momentum spectrum and mass resolution
for pi0- and eta-mesons were measured. The mass resolution for pi0-me
sons with a maximum available energy of 40 GeV is better than 19%. The
possibility of identifying pi0- and eta-mesons over a wide range of m
omenta and measuring their energy within the geometry of MIS ITEP faci
lity is demonstrated.
