Abstract
Partial 26S ribosomal DNA sequences of species assigned to the genera Hanseniaspora, Kloeckera, Dekkera, Brettanomyces, and Eeniella were de termined. A phylogenetic analysis of the sequences showed that the gen us Eeniella is derived within the genus Brettanomyces and that the gen us Hanseniaspora (anamorph Kloeckera) is not closely related to the ge nus Dekkera (anamorph Brettanomyces). As a consequence, the name Eenie lla is reduced to synonymy with the name Brettanomyces. In addition, o ur data do not support reassignment of certain Hanseniaspora species t o the recently revived genus Kloeckeraspora.
