Abstract
Intracellular pH (pH(i)) and lactate were monitored in a superfused br ain slice preparation using NMR spectroscopy in order to study the rol e of lactate washout in maintenance of pH(i) during hypoxia. Data are consistence with a functioning lactate-H+ cotransport in the energetic ally intact cerebral cortex. This pathway is not, however, linked to r egulation of pH, during energy failure with external pH of 6.8 and thu s appears not to have physiological impact in H+ homeostasis during ce rebral hypoxia.
