Abstract
A one-dimensional array of diffusively coupled identical oscillators i s considered. It is demonstrated that coupling of two, three, four, an d six oscillators can create chaos with one, two, three, and four posi tive Lyapunov characteristic exponents, respectively. We suggest that the turbulent behavior found with many coupled cells can be explained in terms of a high-order chaotic attractor.
