Abstract
The central gap in the density of states and the localization of state s on a Penrose lattice are investigated within a tight-binding model f or the vertex problem. The results show that the gap is a consequence of frustration. There are surface states within the gap in a finite la ttice. The correlation between the appearance of the gap and the local ization of states is also studied.
