Treatment of 1-zirconaindenes 1 with tin tetrachloride gave the hither
to unknown 1-benzostannole 2 with two tin-chlorine bonds. Compound 2 r
eacted with various nucleophiles, which led to pure disubstituted deri
vatives, but monosubstitution was not readily achieved. Monosubstitute
d compounds were, however easily obtained by reaction of 1-zirconainde
nes 1 with organotin trichloride. Tin derivatives were characterized b
y multinuclear NMR, microanalysis and mass spectrometry. The first X-r
ay crystal structure determination of a stannole is reported.
