A novel device was constructed and used to bypass a ruptured aortic an
eurysm internally in vitro. Three human aortas each containing an abdo
minal aneurysm were used for the production of transparent silicons ru
bber replicas. A pulsatile flow within the range of physiological para
meters was employed. The aortic aneurysms were ruptured iatrogenically
. After positioning the device in the aneurysm, complete control of fl
uid leakage through the ruptures was achieved. Normal flow through aor
tic abdominal branches and distal to the aneuryms was maintained.
