The air-stable, odorless and bidentate isonitrile ligand has been synt
hesized. The treatment of the isonitrile with iron(II) chloride leads
to the corresponding iron(II) complex, whereas the copper(I) and rhodi
um(I) complexes are prepared with ligand exchange reactions. By the us
e of the molar conductances and the mass spectra, tetrafluoroborate an
d chloride anions in the copper(I) and rhodium(I) complexes are ionize
d. Judging from the NMR, IR and electronic spectral data, the isonitri
le ligand in the complexes serves as a sigma-donor. The copper(I) comp
lex is tetrahedral, the rhodium(I) complex is square-planar and the ir
on(II) complex is octahedral.
