Ac. Kaufman et al., BENIGN ESSENTIAL HEMATURIA IN DOGS, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 16(10), 1994, pp. 1317-1324
Benign essential hematuria and idiopathic renal hematuria are terms th
at are used to describe a condition of massive hematuria of nontraumat
ic renal origin that is not accompanied by any obvious gross or histop
athologic source or mechanism of hemorrhage. Diagnosis of the conditio
n is based on ruling out all other renal and extrarenal causes of hema
turia via the use of invasive and noninvasive techniques. Unlike human
s, dogs with benign essential hematuria may have a bilateral condition
and tend to develop hydronephrosis and hydroureter as a result of obs
truction caused by a blood clot. Treatment of benign essential hematur
ia may involve surgical intervention, iron supplementation, and blood
transfusions.
