Ke. Russell et al., BONE-MARROW IN HORSES - INDICATIONS, SAMPLE HANDLING, AND COMPLICATIONS, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 16(10), 1994, pp. 1359-1366
Information concerning hematopoietic function that is unattinable by o
ther means can be provided by bone marrow aspiration and/or core biops
ies. These procedures are easily performed and are associated with sli
ght risk of complications. The choice of a sampling technique depends
on the information desired from the sample, the clinician's familiarit
y with each technique, the physical condition and temperament of the p
arent, and the availability of laboratory support for processing and i
nterpreting the sample. This article discusses indications and anatomi
c locations for bone marrow sampling in horses, methods for bone marro
w aspiration and core biopsy, techniques for handling of samples after
collection, and potential complications.
