Abstract
The lectin I from Ulex europaeus (UEAI) has a strong affinity for the H-type 2 human blood group determinant. Single crystals of UEAI have b een grown in the monoclinic crystal system. Initial crystals were obta ined after 11 months from a solution of 10 mg/ml protein, 40% 2,4-meth ylpentanediol and 0.1 N acetate buffer at pH 5.2. The technique of was hing and reseeding was used to generate large suitable crystals. The s pace group is C2 with a = 78.84 Angstrom, b = 69.85 Angstrom, c = 120. 62 Angstrom, beta = 108.74 degrees and Z = 4; there is one molecular d imer per asymmetric unit and the solvent content is estimated to be 58 %. The crystals diffract to at least 2.8 Angstrom d spacings and are s table in the X-ray beam for more than three days.
