Deuteron properties have been calculated in the framework of the const
ituent quark model using a quark-quark interaction which incorporates
sigma and pi chiral mesons besides the one-gluon exchange between quar
ks. This interaction is able to describe simultaneously the nucleon-nu
cleon phase shifts. In contrast with earlier calculations, in which eq
uivalent meson potentials between nucleons have been used, this descri
ptions includes only interactions between quarks.
