Abstract
Five 1,8-naphthalenediyl transition metal compounds 2 were prepared by treating either 1,8-napthalenediylmagnesium (1) or 1,8-dilithionaphth alene with the appropriate transition metal dichloride L(n)MCl2: L(n)M = Cp2Ti (2a), (PEt3)2Pt (2b), CpPPh3Rh (2c), Cp*PPh3Ir (2d), or Cp2* Zr (2e). The resulting metallacycles were characterized by NMR and mas s spectrometry. X-ray crystal structure analyses were performed for (1 ,8-naphthalenediyl)titanocene (2a) and 1,8-naphthalenediyl)bis(triethy lphosphane)platinum (2b). Despite the strain induced by the four-membe red metal-containing rings, the naphthalene units show remarkably smal l distortions.
