Supercooling points (SCP) of Coleoptera from the Khybiny Mountains and
the Polar Urals were investigated. The forty one species of five fami
lies were examined. The most of the species were freeze intolerant. Ad
ults of only two species were freeze tolerant: Curtonotus alpinus (Car
abidae) and Lathrobium poljarnis (Staphylinidae). These species inhabi
ted the most severe high altitude mountain regions of the Polar Urals
and the Khybiny Mts. SCP of the species belongs to the same genus were
similar. SCP of Staphylinidae species belongs to the same subfamilies
were also very close. The seasonal and age dynamics of the SCP remain
ed almost constant for specimens from different geographic areas. The
tundra species have no seasonal dynamics of SCP. The SCP of boreal spe
cies were 2-3 degrees lower in autumn then in summer. The SCP of terre
strial species was lower than that of the soil and litter dwelling.
