The poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-acrylamide) resin was synthesized by radic
al polymerization using AlBN and divinylbenzene as initiator and cross
linker agents respectively. The resin was completely insoluble in wate
r. Both homopolymers, poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(acrylamide) were
also synthesized as reference materials. The resin was characterized b
y elemental analyses and FT-IR spectroscopy. The retention properties
of these resins were studied by batch equilibrium procedure, consideri
ng the effect of the pH on the retention of Cu(II), Fe(II), Fe(III), a
nd U(VI), maximum capacity of load for U(VI) at optimum pH; elution by
Na2CO3 and H2SO4 of U(VI) from the loaded resin; retention behaviour
of U(VI) from a binary mixture, Cu(II)-U(VI). Finally the thermal stab
ility was investigated by dynamic thermogravimetry.
