R. Catalan et al., EMULSION OF STYRENE WITH METHACRYLIC ESTE RS AS COATING OF PAPERS, Boletin de la Sociedad Chilena de Quimica, 39(3), 1994, pp. 227-235
Emulsion copolymerization systems are used widely for the production o
f paper coatings, textile coatings and adhesives. These systems employ
two or more vynilic monomers, such as styrene, but, this compound is
water-insoluble. Carboxylated copolymer latexes of styrene are an impo
rtant class of industrial emulsions. They have different compositions
and properties; they can be also used for many comercial applications.
In this work, we have prepared and characterized emulsion copolymeric
systems between styrene-methacrylic acid and styrene-methacrylate in
order to evaluate the copolymeric emulsion as paper coatings. Emulsion
copolymerization of styrene and methacrylic monomers were carried out
at 70-degrees, by using a feed monomer ratio 1:1, potassium peroxydis
ulfate (0.02, 0.064, 0.15% mol), disodium hydrogen phosphate (0.12%),
distilled water (30 ml) and sodium lauryl sulfate (1%). The conversion
was 65% for the cid and 85% for the methcrylic esters. The particle s
izes were uniform and adequate for the emulsion copolymeric systems. O
n the other hand, the sheets with the bleached pulp of industry were m
ade and their physico-mechanical properties were determined. After, th
e copolymeric emulsion systems were added either to the pulp prior to
sheet formation. Then the different properties of paper sheets were me
asured. Physico-mechanical properties and thermal stability were incre
ased.
