Abstract
Some new deoxybenzoins (3a-e) have been prepared in very good yields b y the condensation of 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene with various phenylaceti c acids in presence of polyphosphoric acid under modified Nencki's con ditions. The deoxybenzoins have been formylated under Vilsmeier-Haack conditions and the alpha-formyldeoxybenzoines (4a-d) cyclized subseque ntly to the respective isoflavones (5a-d) by treating them with pyridi ne hydrochloride in pyridine. All the new compounds have been characte rized by their spectral data. Incidentally two of the naturally occurr ing (5c,d) compounds have been synthesized by this method.
