The bio- and isotope biostratigraphy of the uppermost (Quaternary) sec
tion at ODP Sites 122-760A and 122-762B are presented. Biozonations of
Bolli and Premoli Silva (1973) and Chaproniere (1985, 1991) are recog
nized, as well as a distinctive acme in pink-pigmented forms of Globig
erinoides ruber in the Late Pleistocene (isotope stages 5e to approxim
ately 10). These, together with a series of sinistral-coiling events i
n Pulleniatina spp. and Globorotalia truncatulinoides during the Middl
e and Early Pleistocene, serve as locally useful bioevents in this par
t of the eastern Indian Ocean. The biostratigraphy indicates the prese
nce of minor and major hiatuses, the latter associated with physical a
nomalies near 7 m downcore in Hole 760A and between 4.5 m in Hole 762B
.
