A method is presented of preparing platinum particles (radii 1-3 nm) b
y the reduction of H2PtCl6 with NaBH4 in an aqueous acidic host disper
sion of high aspect ratio inorganic (imogolite) fibers. The fibers app
ear to be effective stabilizers for the platinum particles, which sett
le in the absence of imogolite as large aggregates. This influence of
the fibers is examined and explained, details of the syntheses of imog
olite and platinum are discussed, and possible applications of the imo
golite-platinum dispersions for catalysis are indicated.
