Neovascularization is associated with tumor growth and some inflammato
ry diseases but has not been reported to be induced by infectious agen
ts. In a mouse model of systemic Candida albicans infection, extensive
endothelial cell proliferation was seen in the periphery of brain abs
cesses and in the areas of fungal pyelonephritis in the kidney. This f
inding is important for an understanding of the pathogenesis of fungal
infections and may contribute to an analysis of the mechanisms of ang
iogenesis.
