In this paper, we present an application of object-based representatio
n techniques to the design of a knowledge-based system for organic syn
thesis planning. The notion of an object-based representation system d
escribed in this paper relies on the integration of basic programming
styles, such as message sending and access-oriented programming, with
reasoning capabilities, such as classification. The basis for integrat
ion is the subsumption relation that is used jointly with inheritance
to provide a two-dimensional universe in which representation and prob
lem solving can be performed successfully.
