The structure of the hypogenous ascocarp, asci and ascospores of Terfe
zia leonis (a sand truffle) are observed with light and electron micro
scopes. Generic features in Terfezia structure are: smooth peridium, g
leba composed of fertile nodules and dense sterile veins, eightspored
asci, ascospore wall endowed with an oramentation from exosporic origi
n and an endospore. Genera Terfezia and Tuber display common noticeabl
e features justifying that the order Tuberales be maintained among Dis
comycetes.
