Crossflow filtration of 22 and 35 wt% finely ground magnesia in suspen
sion gave permeate flux rates in excess of 100 1 m-2 h-1 at filtration
pressures of a fraction of 1 bar. Nitrate ions were used as a tracer
to monitor the dilution of a solute during washing by crossflow filtra
tion. The wash-water and filtrate rates were kept equal. The reduction
in nitrate concentration during washing followed a perfectly mixed st
irred-tank model of the process. Washing by cross-flow filtration is s
hown to compare favourably with alternative wash strategies when proce
ssing finely ground or poorly settling materials.
