A hypothesis of association of chromosomes of homeological group 7 wit
h genes determining growth habit in common wheat was examined using an
experimental approach. The assumption of Law and Scarth [1] that domi
nant allele Vrn4 is located in chromosome 7A was not confirmed. At the
same time, dominant allele Vrn5 was shown to be located in chromosome
7B of the substitution line Chinese Spring/Hope. It was demonstrated
that neither spring progeny of cv. Hope nor the cultivar itself and it
s parents have this dominant allele. Hypotheses explaining this phenom
enon are discussed.
