This paper reports results of SEM and X-ray microanalysis of microtome
-sectioned weeps from a coater blade. The weeps shared a common struct
ure, which was a bulbous crown on top of a comb of columns that join i
n their upper reaches. Cross-sectioned weeps contained a greater numbe
r of calcium carbonate lumps and large clay booklets in the trunks of
the weeps at the point where they attached to the blade. This suggests
that trunk growth is at least partly caused by blockage of large clay
booklets and calcium carbonate lumps.
