Abstract
An experiment is proposed to study the quantum state and the variance of the phase operator by measuring the momentum distribution of the at oms resulting from the interaction of an atomic beam with a single mod e electromagnetic field via a two-photon interaction. A comparison of the results with those obtained for a one-photon interaction is made. Advantages in using the two-photon interaction are pointed out.
