Sodiummonochloroacetate and sodiumhydroxide were employed under differ
ent conditions to prepare and optimize the carboxymethyl derivative of
Leucaena glauca seed gum. The effects of concentration of reactants,
reaction temperature and time have been interpreted in terms of degree
of carboxymethylation as well as efficiency and rate of carboxymethyl
ation reaction. The formation of the proposed derivative has also been
supported by providing infra-red spectral characterization.
