The neo-clerodane diterpenes montanin C, teucrin P-1 and teupolin III
have been subjected to a series of chemical transformations to give al
pha,beta-unsaturated 15,16- and 16,15-gamma-lactones, 13,14,15,16-tetr
anor-neo-clerodanes, chlorohydrins, vinyl chlorides, and amine, 1-pyrr
oline and 2-pyridazoline derivatives. These compounds have been assaye
d as insect antifeedants against larvae of Spodoptera littoralis and t
he structure-biological activity relationships are discussed.
