Abstract
Activation of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae PHO5 gene is accompanied by the disruption of four positioned nucleosomes at the promoter. The ch romatin transition requires a DNA-binding protein, Pho4, and its trans activation domain. The mechanism of nucleosome disruption and the cont ribution of the nucleosomes to PHO5 regulation are reviewed.
